The Federation of Organisations of Disabled People in Zimbabwe (FODPZ) was contracted to conduct an accessibility audit of CBM Country Office on the 9th of July 2019.
The accessibility audit was also conducted at CBM Zimbabwe country office by FODPZ in partnership with some of its member OPDs including Zimbabwe National Association of the Deaf (ZIMNAD), Disabled Women Support Organisation (DWSO), and Zimbabwe Albino Association (ZIMAS).
Generally, the purpose of this audit was to promote the implementation and compliance with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities and other relevant national and international instruments. Further to this, the audit was aimed at determining the state of inclusiveness of the CBM offices to persons with various impairments and other disabling conditions
Conducting accessibility audits is an opportunity for FODPZ and its member OPDs as experts to drive the inclusion and accessibility agenda at national level. By ensuring that services, offices (private and public), institutions (hospitals, universities and other government buildings) are accessible to all persons with various impairments.
It also acts as a means of generating much needed income for FODPZ as well as its OPDs. This activity can greatly improve sustainability by providing alternative source of income for the OPDs. For instance, DWSO, ZIMNAD where also contracted by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to do accessibility audits of polling stations in some wards during the beginning of the year. This is a much welcome move as the visibility and recognition of FODPZ and its OPDs continue to increase among government and various stakeholders.
